Formerly Piasau Residential enclave for housing Shell’s ex-pat staff, the site consisting of approximately 89 hectares was handed over by SHELL Berhad to the Sarawak Government. The Sarawak Government gazetted the site into a Nature Reserve; to be a restored forest reserve managed by Sarawak Forestry Corporation.

Based on the Gensler’s Masterplan for Piasau Nature Reserved commissioned by Shell Berhad, the Masterplan consists of 3 Zones: Zone 1 – Primary Forest Reserve; Zone 2 – Protected but accessible and; Zone 3 – Focus of Public Access in One Area. The approach in the master plan is rooted in conservation and community which encompasses the following:

-CONSERVATION – Define; Restore area of biodiversity; Protection

-OPTIMIZATION- Manage access to recreational users with existing infrastructure

-DIVERSIFICATION- Offer Immersive educational experiences to increase awareness

-RESEARCH- Strengthen the unique conservation mission through research and study

-COMMUNITY- Engender Community pride and sense of ownership.

Atelier Timur Sdn. Bhd was involved in the building works at Zone 3 to improve facilities in the reserve to promote education and sensitive use of the park. The axis of the site was re-oriented to face the main road (Jalan Peninsula) for better legibility and access with creation of a new main entrance (called the East Gate).

The existing building (formerly Tenby International School) was converted to an Administration-Education-Research-Visitor's Centre that will showcase the Story of Piasau Nature Reserve – before and now – and what the Nature Reserve has to offer.

The development of the interpretation centre with the client, houses the visitor centre where public will find interesting information on the Rainforests, Wildlife, Flora and Fauna of Piasau Nature Reserve and its surrounding areas. Information and history of the site as Piasau Camp and conservation measures close to corporate sponsors heart will be also be showcased in the visitor centre as well.
